The Basics – What does it take to have a website?

Nowadays it is very easy for you or your company to have a website. The question is: will your website make a difference? Some think they just put some pages with information about the company, product or service on the internet and everything is done. However, this is not so. Your customers (or prospective customers) upon accessing your site expect to find updated and relevant information, differentiated services, and effective communication channels with short response time. The webdesigner and the webdeveloper (often may be the same person) should have experience in creating relevant pages with good navigation and that fit the various devices used to access the Internet, such as desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones. Also, you should provide easy access and effective services and communication channels.

To have a website, you need to do the following:

  1. Register a domain. Example: www.yourcompany.com or www.yourname.com;
  2. Hire a web designer to do the layout of the site (design the look of your pages);
  3. Hire a webdeveloper (programmer to transform the layout into HTML, or similar);
  4. Hire a datacenter to host your website;
  5. Advertise to the public.

How much will I spend to have a website?

The price of a website can vary from a few dozen dollars to many thousands of dollars. Everything will depend on the design of your project and what will be developed. If your site is just institutional, like a channel for information and communication with customers and partners, the cost is lower. On the other hand, if you want to develop applications that will be used throughout the site, then the cost can rise. Generally, the layout and development of a basic institutional site is between US$ 1,000.00 and US$ 3,000.00 and websites with advanced features can cost between US$ 5,000.00 and US$ 50,000.00. Of course this will depend largely on the size and complexity of each project. Domain registration (yourcompany.com) costs around US$15.00 per year. The host can also vary widely, but a small site is close to US$ 20.00/ month.

How do I register a domain?

To register a domain you have to find a registration agent, like register.com or namecheap.com. The first step is to search the domain database to see if your desired name is registered yet. Then, follow the registration agent’s procedures and you are done.

How and where to host my website?

There are many options for hosting your website. Usually companies sell simple hosting plans for between US$ 9.00 and US$ 19.00 per month. When choosing a provider it is important that you check what services are offered and if there is a commitment to availability. Other points to be considered are: technical support, size of the space for storage of pages and data transfer volume per month without charging extra, among others. A simple Google search for “web hosting” will bring a multitude of options.
